How to use this tool

  1. Enter your own figures over the defaults — Height, Sex at birth.
  2. The answer updates as you type. There is no button, and nothing is sent anywhere.
  3. Change one input at a time to see how sensitive the answer is to it.

There is no single ideal weight. The formulas here date from the 1970s and were designed for medication dosing, not health targets. Treat the BMI range as the more meaningful guide.

How it works

This takes 2 inputs — height, sex at birth — and returns devine formula, healthy bmi range and note. The whole calculation happens in this page as you type: there is no submit button, no request, and nothing stored.

A worked example

Worked through with the figures the page already has in it: height of 175 cm and sex at birth of Male, giving devine formula of 70.5 kg. These numbers come from running the calculator’s own code, not from being typed in here, so they cannot drift away from what you see on screen.

Starting from:

  • Height: 175 cm
  • Sex at birth: Male
ResultValue
Devine formula70.5 kg
Healthy BMI range56.7–76.3 kg
NoteFormulas differ and none account for build or muscle. Treat as a rough guide.

Ideal Weight Calculator — frequently asked questions

Which formula is right?

None is authoritative. Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi all give different answers. The healthy BMI range is a more defensible target.

Does build matter?

Yes, and none of these formulas account for it. Frame size and muscle mass both shift what is healthy for an individual.

Should I aim for this number?

Not literally. Body composition, fitness and health markers matter more than hitting a specific weight.

Is this calculator free?

Yes, with no account, no limits and no data collection. It runs entirely in your browser.

Should I rely on this for a financial or medical decision?

No. It is a planning estimate built on standard formulas and stated assumptions. For decisions that matter, speak to a qualified professional who can account for your full circumstances.

Is this calculator accurate?

The arithmetic is exact — it uses the standard formula. What limits accuracy is the assumptions: the figures you enter, and factors the formula does not model such as fees, taxes and rule changes.
