YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Get every thumbnail size for any YouTube video — paste the link and preview all five.

Before you use this: Browsers cannot save an image from another domain directly — cross-origin rules prevent it. "Open image" loads the thumbnail from YouTube’s own server, where you save it with right-click. Sites offering true one-click download are routing the file through their own server, which means your request is no longer private.

How to use this tool

  1. Select your file, drag it onto the box above.
  2. Processing starts automatically — there is nothing to configure.
  3. Check the result panel, which shows the original size, the final size and the page count.
  4. Click Download to save it.

Paste any YouTube link: a normal watch URL, a youtu.be short link, a Shorts link, an embed URL, or just the 11-character video ID. All five thumbnail sizes YouTube publishes are shown at once.

The specification

maxresdefault1280 × 720 — only if the uploader supplied an HD thumbnail
sddefault640 × 480 — usually present
hqdefault480 × 360 — always present
mqdefault320 × 180 — always present
default120 × 90 — always present

Why uploads get rejected

Meeting the size is only part of it. These are the failures that actually come up:

  • The URL is not recognised. Paste a watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed link, or the bare video ID.
  • maxresdefault shows as unavailable. That size only exists when the uploader provided an HD thumbnail — the others will still work.
  • The video is private or deleted, so no thumbnail is served.

How it works

The video ID is extracted from whatever URL form you paste — watch links, youtu.be short links, Shorts, embeds, or a bare ID — and the thumbnail URLs are built from it. YouTube publishes thumbnails at fixed, predictable paths, so no API call is needed.

Images load directly from YouTube's servers into your browser. Nothing passes through us.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not download directly?

Browser security prevents a page on one domain from reading and saving an image hosted on another. Any site that appears to do it is proxying the file through its own server. We would rather open the real URL than route your activity through us.

Why is the max resolution thumbnail missing?

maxresdefault only exists if the uploader provided a 1280 × 720 thumbnail. Older and auto-generated videos often lack it, so the other four sizes are your options.

Can I use someone else’s thumbnail?

Thumbnails are copyrighted by the uploader. Viewing and referencing is fine; republishing one as your own is not. Use them for research, not reuse.

Is there a limit on how many files I can process?

No. There is no daily cap, no account, and no watermark. Because the work happens on your device rather than our servers, there is nothing for us to ration.

Is this tool really free?

Yes — no account, no trial, no watermark, and no cap on usage. It runs on your own device rather than our servers, so there is no cost for us to pass on.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface adapts to phone and tablet screens, and everything runs in the browser, so there is no app to install.
