Image Size Requirements for Every Major Platform
The exact pixel dimensions and file size limits for Amazon, Etsy, eBay, Shopify, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram — with the reason each limit exists.
Most published lists of image sizes are copied from one another and quietly go stale. This one records where each figure comes from and when it was checked. Everything here was verified on 30 August 2026.
Marketplaces
Amazon
| Recommended | 2000 × 2000 pixels |
|---|---|
| Minimum | 500 px on the longest side |
| Maximum | 10000 px on the longest side |
| File size | Up to 10 MB |
| Main image background | Pure white, RGB 255,255,255 |
| Product coverage | At least 85% of the frame |
The number that matters commercially is not the minimum. Hover-zoom activates at roughly 1000 pixels, and listings without working zoom convert measurably worse. 2000 × 2000 puts you comfortably clear of that threshold.
Main images may not carry text, logos, watermarks, or borders. Secondary images may.
Etsy
| Recommended | 2000 px or more on the shortest side |
|---|---|
| Thumbnail minimum | 635 × 635 pixels |
| File size | Under 1 MB recommended |
| Images per listing | Up to 10 |
The 1 MB figure is the one sellers miss. Etsy accepts larger files in principle, but uploads above roughly 1 MB stall often enough that Etsy itself advises staying under it. If your uploads keep failing partway, this is almost always why.
eBay
1600 pixels on the longest side. This is a hard threshold rather than a preference: below 1600 px, eBay's desktop zoom simply does not turn on.
Shopify
2048 × 2048 recommended, square. Maximum file size 20 MB, though under 3 MB is sensible for page speed. Maximum dimensions 4472 × 4472.
Video and social
YouTube thumbnails
1280 × 720 pixels, 16:9, and a hard 2 MB limit. YouTube refuses files above it rather than compressing them for you. PNG exports from design tools routinely exceed 2 MB; saving as JPEG typically cuts that by 70% or more with no visible difference.
LinkedIn profile banner
1584 × 396 pixels — a 4:1 strip, maximum 8 MB. Your profile photo covers the lower left corner on desktop and mobile crops the sides heavily, so keep anything important in the upper right.
1080 × 1350 (4:5 portrait) is the most useful single size, because Meta displays portrait images larger than squares in the feed. Use 1080 × 1080 for square posts and 1080 × 1920 for Stories and Reels.
A practical shortcut
If you are selling across several marketplaces, keep one master image at 2000 × 2000 pixels on a pure white background, saved as JPEG. That single file satisfies Amazon outright, clears eBay's 1600 px zoom threshold, and sits just under Shopify's 2048 px recommendation. Export a copy under 1 MB for Etsy and you have covered all four.
Why these limits exist
They fall into three groups, and knowing which is which tells you how much room you have:
- Hard rejections — YouTube's 2 MB. The upload fails outright. No flexibility.
- Feature thresholds — eBay's 1600 px, Amazon's zoom point. The upload succeeds, but you silently lose a feature that affects conversions.
- Reliability advice — Etsy's 1 MB. Technically optional, but ignoring it means uploads that fail intermittently for no obvious reason.
