Etsy Listing Photo — Under 1 MB

The 1 MB guidance is the part sellers miss. Etsy accepts larger files in principle, but uploads above roughly 1 MB stall often enough that Etsy itself recommends staying under it.

Target: under 1 MB
Dimensions: 2000 × 2000 px
Choose an image or drag it here JPG, PNG, WebP · up to 25 MB · you can also paste from the clipboard

How to use this tool

  1. Select your file, drag it onto the box above, or paste it from your clipboard.
  2. Processing starts automatically — there is nothing to configure.
  3. Check the result panel, which shows the original size, the final size and the output dimensions.
  4. Click Download to save it.

Marketplace image rules are part technical requirement and part commercial lever — some thresholds unlock features like zoom that measurably affect conversion.

Why uploads get rejected

Meeting the size is only part of it. These are the failures that actually come up:

  • The upload stalls partway — almost always a file over 1 MB.
  • The photo is under 635 pixels, so it cannot serve as the thumbnail.
  • The image is a PNG photograph, several times larger than the JPEG equivalent.

How it works

Most compressors pick a fixed quality level and hope for the best, which is why they either overshoot the limit or land far below it and throw away detail you did not need to lose.

This tool runs a binary search instead. It encodes your image at a mid-range quality, measures the resulting file, then narrows the range — higher if there is room, lower if it is over — repeating seven times. It keeps the largest result that still fits. If the lowest quality is still too big, it reduces the pixel dimensions and searches again.

All of it runs on your own device using the browser's canvas API. Nothing is transmitted.

Who uses this

Etsy sellers preparing listing photographs, especially anyone uploading a full set of ten images where file size decides whether the batch completes.

Frequently asked questions

What image size does Etsy need?

2000 px or more on the shortest side. This tool outputs 2000 × 2000 pixels.

Why does image size affect sales?

Several marketplaces gate features on resolution — zoom in particular. Buyers who cannot zoom cannot inspect condition or detail, and they buy less as a result.

Can I use one image across marketplaces?

Largely yes. A 2000 × 2000 white-background JPEG satisfies Amazon, clears eBay’s 1600 px zoom threshold, and sits just under Shopify’s 2048 px recommendation. Export a copy under 1 MB for Etsy and you have covered all four.

Does this remove the background?

No. It places your image on a white canvas, which handles transparent PNGs correctly, but it cannot cut a product out of a photographed background.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device. Your file is never transmitted and never stored by us. You can confirm this by opening your browser’s Network tab while you use the tool — you will see no upload request.

Is there a limit on how many files I can process?

No. There is no daily cap, no account, and no watermark. Because the work happens on your device rather than our servers, there is nothing for us to ration.

Is this tool really free?

Yes — no account, no trial, no watermark, and no cap on usage. It runs on your own device rather than our servers, so there is no cost for us to pass on.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The interface adapts to phone and tablet screens, and everything runs in the browser, so there is no app to install.
