Etsy Listing Photo — Under 1 MB: why uploads get rejected
Getting under the limit is the easy half. The 2000 × 2000 pixel box has to be right as well, and several other things are checked before a human sees the file:
- The upload stalls partway — almost always a file over 1 MB.
- The photo is under 635 pixels, so it cannot serve as the thumbnail.
- The image is a PNG photograph, several times larger than the JPEG equivalent.
How it works
Hitting a size limit exactly is a search problem, not a setting. There is no quality value that means “1.00 MB” — how many bytes a given quality produces depends entirely on the picture. So this tool encodes, measures the real file, and adjusts.
Here the dimensions are fixed at 2000 × 2000 px by the specification, so scaling is not available as a lever. Everything has to come from the quality setting, and the tool reports honestly when the two requirements cannot both be met.
It then binary-searches the quality parameter: encode, measure, halve the remaining range, repeat. The run below took 7 encodes to land at 897.1 KB. A tool that picks one fixed quality instead either overshoots the limit or comes in far under it and throws away detail you did not need to lose.
The crop, the resize and every encode happen on your own device through the browser’s canvas API. A photograph for an official form is not a file worth handing to someone else’s server, and this page never receives it.

Step by step
The dimensions here are fixed by the specification (2000 × 2000 px), so the image cannot be scaled to help. The file size has to come from quality alone.
The first probe at quality 0.96 came out at 1.32 MB, about 1.3× the 1.00 MB limit, so the search began.
It then narrowed the quality setting 6 times — quality 0.51 gave 177.7 KB, quality 0.73 gave 326.7 KB, quality 0.85 gave 493.6 KB, quality 0.9 gave 686.4 KB, and so on — settling on quality 0.93.

Why does image size affect sales?

Can I use one image across marketplaces?

Does this remove the background?
No. It places your image on a white canvas, which handles transparent PNGs correctly, but it cannot cut a product out of a photographed background.
What happens to my photo's proportions at 2000 × 2000?
The image is cropped to fill 2000 × 2000 from the centre, never stretched. Stretching to fit would distort faces, which is exactly what gets a photo rejected. If your subject is off-centre, crop it yourself first so the centre of the frame is what you want kept.
Why does the output have a white background?
Transparency cannot survive as JPEG, so transparent areas are filled rather than turned black. White is what forms and ID photos expect. If you need transparency kept, use a PNG tool instead.
