Mercari Listing Photo Size: why uploads get rejected
Getting under the limit is the easy half. The 1080 × 1080 pixel box has to be right as well, and several other things are checked before a human sees the file:
- The photo is cropped awkwardly because it was shot in portrait.
How it works
Hitting a size limit exactly is a search problem, not a setting. There is no quality value that means “1.00 MB” — how many bytes a given quality produces depends entirely on the picture. So this tool encodes, measures the real file, and adjusts.
Here the dimensions are fixed at 1080 × 1080 px by the specification, so scaling is not available as a lever. Everything has to come from the quality setting, and the tool reports honestly when the two requirements cannot both be met.

Why does image size affect sales?
Several marketplaces gate features on resolution — zoom in particular. Buyers who cannot zoom cannot inspect condition or detail, and they buy less as a result.
Can I use one image across marketplaces?
Largely yes. A 2000 × 2000 white-background JPEG satisfies Amazon, clears eBay’s 1600 px zoom threshold, and sits just under Shopify’s 2048 px recommendation. Export a copy under 1 MB for Etsy and you have covered all four.
Does this remove the background?
No. It places your image on a white canvas, which handles transparent PNGs correctly, but it cannot cut a product out of a photographed background.
What happens to my photo's proportions at 1080 × 1080?
The image is cropped to fill 1080 × 1080 from the centre, never stretched. Stretching to fit would distort faces, which is exactly what gets a photo rejected. If your subject is off-centre, crop it yourself first so the centre of the frame is what you want kept.
Why does the output have a white background?
Transparency cannot survive as JPEG, so transparent areas are filled rather than turned black. White is what forms and ID photos expect. If you need transparency kept, use a PNG tool instead.
