Crop Image to a Square

Crop any photograph to a perfect square without changing its resolution or distorting it.

Target: under 4 MB
Dimensions: Original ratio kept
Choose an image or drag it here under 4 MB · JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC in · JPEG out · paste from the clipboard works too

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your image, drag it onto the box, or paste it from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC all go in; JPEG comes out.
  2. There is nothing to set. This page is already fixed at under 4.00 MB, JPEG.
  3. Download from the panel, which shows the original size, the final size and the output dimensions. Nothing was uploaded at any point.

Instagram grid posts, profile pictures on almost every platform, and marketplace listing thumbnails all expect a square. Cropping to 1:1 keeps the centre of your frame at full resolution rather than squashing the whole picture into a box. The crop is taken from the centre at your image’s own resolution, so a 12 megapixel photograph stays a high-resolution image — it simply becomes square (1:1).

Crop Image to a Square: why uploads get rejected

Landing under 4 MB is necessary but not sufficient. These are the reasons a file that meets the size still gets sent back:

  • The subject is near an edge, so a centre crop cuts it. Crop manually in a photo app if the composition matters.
  • You need exact pixel dimensions rather than a ratio — use the matching resize page.
  • The source is already square (1:1), in which case nothing changes.

How it works

Most compressors pick a fixed quality level and hope for the best, which is why they either overshoot the limit or land far below it and throw away detail you did not need to lose.

This tool runs a binary search instead. It encodes your image at a mid-range quality, measures the resulting file, then narrows the range — higher if there is room, lower if it is over — repeating seven times. It keeps the largest result that still fits. If the lowest quality is still too big, it reduces the pixel dimensions and searches again.

All of it runs on your own device using the browser's canvas API. Nothing is transmitted.

Who needs Crop Image to a Square

Profile photographs, Instagram grid posts, marketplace listings and anywhere a layout expects a square tile.

Crop Image to a Square — frequently asked questions

Does this reduce my image resolution?

No. The crop is taken at your image’s own resolution — it removes the parts outside the ratio rather than scaling anything down. A 4000 × 3000 photograph cropped to 1:1 stays a multi-megapixel image.

Where is the crop taken from?

The centre. That is the right default for portraits and most photographs, but if your subject sits near an edge you will want to crop manually first so the part you care about survives.

Can I crop to a ratio and a file size at once?

This page handles the ratio. If a form also caps the file size, run the result through the matching compression page afterwards — cropping first is the right order, because it removes pixels the compressor would otherwise have to describe.

Will the file still be under 4 MB after I save it again?

Yes, as long as you do not re-encode it. Downloading and uploading the same file changes nothing. Opening it in an editor and saving again re-compresses it and can push the size back up, so upload the file you downloaded here rather than a copy you have edited.

Which file types can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and HEIC from an iPhone all go in. The output here is JPEG. Conversion happens as part of the process, so there is no need to convert first.

Does this work on a phone?

Yes, including photos straight from your camera roll. The work happens on the device, so a very large image is slower on a phone than on a laptop, but nothing is uploaded either way.
