No AI and no model download, which is why it is instant. Auto mode reads the image's own histogram and applies the same operations a photo app's "auto" button uses: stretch the levels so blacks are black and whites are white, lift colour where it is flat, then sharpen with an unsharp mask.

Why uploads get rejected
Meeting the size is only part of it. These are the failures that actually come up:
- The photo is very dark or very blurred. Enhancement adjusts what was captured; it cannot recover detail that was never recorded.
- The image is already well processed, so auto mode changes little. That is correct behaviour, not a failure.
- You expected AI upscaling. This is not that — it improves tone and sharpness at the existing resolution.
How it works
Most compressors pick a fixed quality level and hope for the best, which is why they either overshoot the limit or land far below it and throw away detail you did not need to lose.
This tool runs a binary search instead. It encodes your image at a mid-range quality, measures the resulting file, then narrows the range — higher if there is room, lower if it is over — repeating seven times. It keeps the largest result that still fits. If the lowest quality is still too big, it reduces the pixel dimensions and searches again.
All of it runs on your own device using the browser's canvas API. Nothing is transmitted.

Frequently asked questions
Is this AI?
No, and it does not need to be. Auto-levels, saturation and unsharp masking are well-understood image processing that runs in milliseconds. An AI model would mean a 40 MB download and a slower result for no visible gain on these operations.
Can it fix a blurry photo?
Not really. Sharpening increases edge contrast, which makes a slightly soft image look crisper. It cannot recover detail that motion blur or bad focus destroyed — that information is gone.
Why does auto mode do nothing to my photo?
Because your photo is already well exposed. Auto-levels only has room to work when the histogram does not already span the full range.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs inside your browser on your own device. Your file is never transmitted and never stored by us. You can confirm this by opening your browser’s Network tab while you use the tool — you will see no upload request.
