Convert SVG to PNG

Convert a SVG image to PNG without uploading it anywhere.

Target: best quality
Dimensions: Original ratio kept

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your image. The output here is PNG, so anything with transparency or sharp text keeps its edges — but see the note below about what that costs in size.
  2. There is nothing to set. This page is already fixed at PNG.
  3. Check the result. PNG is lossless, so if the target could not be reached at a usable size the panel explains why instead of handing you a thumbnail.

An SVG is instructions for drawing a picture; a PNG is the picture. Converting fixes the many places that reject vector files, at the cost of the scalability that made it an SVG. It renders at the size the file declares, so check the result is large enough before using it.

Convert SVG to PNG: what can go wrong

These are the failures that actually come up, in roughly the order they happen:

  • The PNG came out smaller than you wanted. An SVG with only a viewBox and no width or height attribute has no size of its own, so the browser falls back to a default — around 250 pixels wide. Add width and height to the opening svg tag to control the output size.
  • The file is corrupt or was only partially downloaded.
  • The upload target does not accept PNG. Check before converting.

How it works

Your browser decodes the SVG file, then re-encodes it as PNG. Both steps use the browser's own image pipeline, so no library is downloaded and nothing is sent over the network.

Where the source has transparency and the target format does not support it, transparent areas are filled with white rather than black — the default that catches people out with other converters.

Who needs Convert SVG to PNG

Fixing format rejections on upload forms, preparing images for software that only accepts certain formats, and reducing file size where the source format is inefficient.

Convert SVG to PNG — frequently asked questions

Does converting lose quality?

The conversion itself is high quality, but note that quality already lost in the source cannot be recovered. Converting a heavily compressed JPEG to PNG preserves the artefacts at a larger file size.

Is EXIF data preserved?

No. Metadata including camera details and GPS coordinates is discarded during conversion. For most people that is a privacy benefit, but if you need EXIF retained, this is not the right tool.

Can I convert several files at once?

Not currently — one file at a time. Each conversion takes under a second, so a small batch is quick.

Which file types can I upload?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and HEIC from an iPhone all go in. The output here is PNG. Conversion happens as part of the process, so there is no need to convert first.

Does this work on a phone?

Yes, including photos straight from your camera roll. The work happens on the device, so a very large image is slower on a phone than on a laptop, but nothing is uploaded either way.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. No account, no trial period, no watermark on the output and no cap on how many times you use it. The site is funded by advertising.
