Copy and Paste Text to PDF Online: what can go wrong

Most failures here are not about the document itself but about how it was produced. The ones that actually come up:

  • The text contains Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Hebrew, Greek or Cyrillic characters. The standard PDF fonts cannot encode them, so the tool stops rather than giving you blank boxes.
  • The box is empty — type or paste something first.
  • Extremely long input on a low-memory device. Split it into parts.

How it works

The text is laid out with pdf-lib, which writes genuine text objects into the PDF — each line is stored as characters plus a position, exactly as a word processor would write it. Lines are measured against the page width using the real font metrics and wrapped where they would overflow, and blank lines in your input are preserved as blank lines in the output.

The result has a live text layer: you can select it, search it, copy it, and a screen reader can read it aloud. This is the difference that matters. A common shortcut is to render the text to an image and wrap that image in a PDF — visually identical, and useless to anything that has to read the document.

The standard PDF fonts are WinAnsi-encoded and physically cannot represent Hindi, Bengali, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Hebrew, Greek or Cyrillic. Rather than silently dropping those characters and handing you a page of blank boxes, the tool detects them and stops with an explanation.

A measured run

We put 63 words (387 characters) of a typical declaration through this page and recorded what came out.

Pages 1 Lines 9 Words 63 Page size A4 File size 1.3 KB Text layer Selectable & searchable

The finished file was 1.3 KB. That is the number worth noticing: the same text rendered to an image and wrapped in a PDF would be tens of times larger and would contain no text at all — nothing to select, search, or read aloud. Here the characters are stored as characters.

Copy and Paste Text to PDF Online — frequently asked questions

Will the text be selectable in the PDF?

Yes. Real text is written into the file, so you can select it, search it and copy it out, and a screen reader can read it. Tools that render text to an image produce a file that looks identical and is unreadable to all of those.

Can I convert Hindi, Arabic or Chinese text?

No, and this tool tells you so instead of failing quietly. The standard PDF fonts are WinAnsi-encoded and have no glyphs for those scripts — the output would be blank boxes. For non-Latin scripts, write the document in a word processor with a suitable font and export to PDF from there.

A4 or Letter — which should I pick?

A4 (210 × 297 mm) everywhere except the United States and Canada, which use Letter (8.5 × 11 in). Choosing wrong means margins shift and content reflows when the file is printed, which matters for anything official.

Is there a length limit?

No fixed limit. Pages are added automatically as needed. Very long documents are bounded only by your browser tab's memory.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. No account, no trial period, no watermark on the output and no cap on how many times you use it. The site is funded by advertising.

Do I need to install anything?

No. There is nothing to download and no extension to add — it runs in the browser you are reading this in.

What happens to formatting when you paste

Text pasted out of Word, Google Docs, a web page or an email arrives as plain characters. Bold, italics, colours, headings, bullet styling and embedded links are all dropped, because the box you are pasting into holds text and nothing else. Line breaks and paragraph breaks survive.

That is usually what you want and occasionally a surprise, so it is worth saying plainly before you paste a styled document and wonder where the headings went. If the formatting is the point, export a PDF from the application that holds the formatting.

Two things worth checking after a paste from a web page. Non-breaking spaces and curly quotes come across as the characters they are, which is fine. But text copied from a PDF viewer often arrives with a line break at the end of every visual line rather than every paragraph, because that is how the PDF stored it — so the result can look raggedly broken. Paste it into a plain text editor first if that happens, or use the find and replace tool to strip the stray breaks.
