Word Frequency Counter
Count how often each word appears in a text, ranked, with percentages and a lexical variety score.
How to use this tool
- Paste or type your text into the box above.
- The result updates as you change the input — there is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.
- Read the figures in the result panel, or copy the converted text.
- Use Copy or Download if you need the output elsewhere. Nothing was uploaded at any point.
Common function words such as "the" and "of" can be excluded, because they top every list and tell you nothing. The lexical variety figure is unique words as a share of total words: a low number means the text repeats itself, which is usually worth knowing before you publish it.

How it works
This tool runs entirely in your browser. There is no server involved, which means nothing you type or upload is transmitted, stored, or logged — and there are no usage limits, because there is nothing for us to ration.
You can confirm it yourself: open your browser's developer tools, select the Network tab, and use the tool. No request is made.
Who needs Word Frequency Counter
Checking whether an article leans too hard on one phrase, finding the real subject of a long document, or spotting keyword stuffing in copy you have been sent.
Word Frequency Counter — frequently asked questions
What counts as a word?
A run of letters, digits, apostrophes or hyphens. Leading and trailing punctuation is stripped, so "word," and "word" count as the same thing. Case is ignored.
What is lexical variety?
Unique words divided by total words. Around 40 to 50% is typical for ordinary prose. Much lower suggests repetition; much higher often means the text is too short for the measure to mean anything.
Why exclude common words?
Without that filter the top ten is always the, of, and, to, a. Excluding them surfaces the words that actually characterise the text.
Does this work offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working, because all the processing happens in your browser. That is also the simplest way to confirm nothing is being sent anywhere.
Is there a limit on how much I can paste in?
Nothing we impose. The practical limit is your device’s memory, since the work happens locally. Very large inputs get slower rather than being refused.
Can I use this on a phone?
Yes. The layout adapts to a small screen and everything works the same way.
