How to Resize a Photo and Signature for IBPS, SBI and Bank Exams

Published 2026-11-04 · Last reviewed 2026-11-04

Bank exams are the strictest uploads in Indian recruitment — exact pixel dimensions plus a thumb impression and a handwritten declaration. Here is each file, in order.

IBPS and SBI run the tightest upload specification of any Indian recruitment board, and they are the only ones that ask for four files rather than two. If you have only prepared a photo and a signature, you are halfway done.

Specification Photograph 200 × 230 px, 20–50 KB, JPG, light background. Signature 140 × 60 px, 10–20 KB, JPG. Read from ibps.in.

The four files

  1. Photograph — 200 × 230 pixels, 20–50 KB, JPG, light background.
  2. Signature — 140 × 60 pixels, 10–20 KB, JPG.
  3. Left thumb impression — black or blue ink on white paper.
  4. Handwritten declaration — the prescribed text, copied out in running handwriting.

IBPS is stricter than most: it publishes an exact 200 × 230 pixel photograph requirement, and additionally asks for a left thumb impression and a handwritten declaration as separate uploads.

The photograph

200 × 230 is an unusual, slightly tall ratio — it is not a standard passport crop, and a square photo squeezed into it will look stretched. Crop to the right shape first, then resize.

Why the minimum catches people out

This is the single most common way a second or third attempt fails. The specification is a range. A photograph squeezed down to 6 KB is rejected exactly as firmly as one at 80 KB, and the error message rarely distinguishes between the two. If you have compressed a file repeatedly trying to get it accepted, check whether you have fallen through the floor.

The signature

140 × 60 pixels, 10–20 KB. Not in capitals — IBPS and SBI both reject block-capital signatures explicitly, and this is stated in the advertisement rather than buried. If you normally sign in capitals you will need a different signature for this form than the one you use at the bank.

The thumb impression

Left thumb, black or blue ink, on white paper. Press once and lift — a smudged or double impression is rejected, and re-inking over a bad print makes it worse. The ridge detail needs to survive, so photograph it in flat light without shadow.

The handwritten declaration

This one has a rule people miss: it must be in running handwriting, not capitals, and it must be written by the candidate. Copy the exact text printed in the advertisement — do not paraphrase it, and do not type it.

The method, in the order that works

Every one of these forms checks the same four things, and they are checked independently. A file can pass three and fail the fourth.

  1. Format. JPG. Not PNG, not HEIC, not WebP, whatever your phone saved it as. Renaming the file does not convert it — portals read the bytes inside, not the extension.
  2. Pixel dimensions, where the board publishes them.
  3. File size, which is almost always a range rather than a ceiling.
  4. Content — plain background, face filling most of the frame, a signature in running handwriting on white paper.

Do them in that order. Cropping and resizing change the file size, so if you compress first you will have to do it again. Set the dimensions, then squeeze the kilobytes, then check you are still above the minimum.

Every tool linked here runs inside your browser. Your photograph and signature are never uploaded to this site or anywhere else, which matters rather more than usual when the file is a scan of your signature.
