How to use this tool
- Enter your own figures over the defaults — Bill, Tip, Split between.
- The answer updates as you type. There is no button, and nothing is sent anywhere.
- Change Tip on its own to see how much it moves the result — the worked example below shows exactly that.
US restaurant tipping conventionally runs 15–20%, higher in major cities. Many other countries tip far less or not at all, and some add service automatically.
How it works
This takes 3 inputs — bill, tip, split between — and returns each person pays, tip and total. The whole calculation happens in this page as you type: there is no submit button, no request, and nothing stored.
Because it recalculates on every keystroke you can use it as a sensitivity test rather than a one-shot answer. Moving tip alone from 18 to 19 changes each person pays from 47.20 to 47.60 — the worked example below sets that out in full.
A worked example
Worked through with the figures the page already has in it: bill of 80 and tip of 18 %, and the rest as shown, giving each person pays of 47.20. These numbers come from running the calculator’s own code, not from being typed in here, so they cannot drift away from what you see on screen.
Starting from:
- Bill: 80
- Tip: 18 %
- Split between: 2
| Result | Value |
|---|---|
| Each person pays | 47.20 |
| Tip | 14.40 |
| Total | 94.40 |
What happens when one input moves
Holding everything else steady and changing Tip from 18 % to 19 % — one percentage point — moves the answer like this:
| Figure | 18 % | 19 % |
|---|---|---|
| Each person pays | 47.20 | 47.60 |
| Tip | 14.40 | 15.20 |
| Total | 94.40 | 95.20 |
That is usually the number worth arguing over: it is easier to move than the headline amount, and the difference compounds across the whole term.
Tip Calculator — frequently asked questions
How much should I tip?
In the US, 15–20% at restaurants is conventional, with 20% common for good service. Norms differ sharply by country.
Before or after tax?
Etiquette guides generally say pre-tax, though many people tip on the total. The difference is small.
What if service is already included?
Check the bill. Many countries add a service charge automatically, in which case an additional tip is optional.
Is this calculator free?
Yes, with no account, no limits and no data collection. It runs entirely in your browser.
Should I rely on this for a financial or medical decision?
No. It is a planning estimate built on standard formulas and stated assumptions. For decisions that matter, speak to a qualified professional who can account for your full circumstances.
How accurate is the Tip figure?
The arithmetic is exact. With the defaults on this page — bill 80, tip 18 %, split between 2 — it returns each person pays of 47.20. What limits accuracy is the assumptions, not the maths: change tip to 19 % and the same formula gives 47.60. Treat it as a well-founded estimate, not a quotation.
