Hash Generator

Generate MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hashes of any text, computed in your browser.

Updates as you type
Nothing is sent anywhere

How to use this tool

  1. Paste or type your text into the box above.
  2. The result updates as you change the input — there is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.
  3. Read the figures in the result panel, or copy the converted text.
  4. Use Copy or Download if you need the output elsewhere. Nothing was uploaded at any point.

All three are computed locally with implementations checked against the published test vectors in RFC 1321 and FIPS 180-4, and cross-checked against a reference implementation. Nothing you type is transmitted, which is the point when you are hashing anything sensitive.

How it works

This tool runs entirely in your browser. There is no server involved, which means nothing you type or upload is transmitted, stored, or logged — and there are no usage limits, because there is nothing for us to ration.

You can confirm it yourself: open your browser's developer tools, select the Network tab, and use the tool. No request is made.

Who needs Hash Generator

Checking a checksum you were given, generating a digest for an API signature, or confirming two strings are identical without comparing them by eye.

Hash Generator — frequently asked questions

Is MD5 still safe to use?

Not for security. MD5 is broken against collision attacks and must not be used for passwords, signatures or integrity against a motivated attacker. It is still common for non-adversarial checksums and legacy system compatibility, which is why it is here.

Why does my hash differ from another tool?

Almost always a trailing newline or different character encoding. These hashes are over the exact UTF-8 bytes of what you typed, with nothing added.

Can I hash a file?

Not with this tool, which takes text. File hashing needs the file read as bytes rather than as characters.

Should I hash passwords with this?

No. Passwords need a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2. A plain SHA-256 of a password is crackable at enormous speed.

Does this work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working, because all the processing happens in your browser. That is also the simplest way to confirm nothing is being sent anywhere.

Is there a limit on how much I can paste in?

Nothing we impose. The practical limit is your device’s memory, since the work happens locally. Very large inputs get slower rather than being refused.
