JSON to YAML

Convert JSON into YAML, with the quoting rules that stop YAML reading your values as the wrong type.

Updates as you type
Nothing is sent anywhere

How to use this tool

  1. Paste or type your text into the box above.
  2. The result updates as you change the input — there is nothing to submit and nothing to wait for.
  3. Read the figures in the result panel, or copy the converted text.
  4. Use Copy or Download if you need the output elsewhere. Nothing was uploaded at any point.

The conversion is not just indentation. YAML treats bare yes, no, on, off, true and null as booleans and nulls, and a bare 1.20 as a number that loses its trailing zero. Strings that would be misread are quoted automatically, and multi-line strings become literal blocks rather than being flattened.

How it works

This tool runs entirely in your browser. There is no server involved, which means nothing you type or upload is transmitted, stored, or logged — and there are no usage limits, because there is nothing for us to ration.

You can confirm it yourself: open your browser's developer tools, select the Network tab, and use the tool. No request is made.

Who needs JSON to YAML

Moving a configuration between tools that prefer different formats, converting an API response into a readable config, and preparing values for Docker Compose, Kubernetes or a CI pipeline.

JSON to YAML — frequently asked questions

Why did it quote a value I did not expect?

Because YAML would otherwise read it as something else. The string "yes" becomes a boolean, "123" becomes a number, "null" becomes nothing at all, and a value starting with a dash looks like a list item. Quoting preserves what the JSON actually said.

Does it convert YAML back to JSON?

No, and that is deliberate. Emitting YAML correctly is a tractable problem; parsing arbitrary YAML is genuinely hard, and a parser that quietly mishandles an anchor or a multi-line block would corrupt a config file without saying so.

Is my data sent anywhere?

No. The conversion uses your browser’s own JSON parser and runs locally, which matters because config files routinely contain keys and credentials.

What happens to empty objects and arrays?

They are emitted as {} and [] rather than as nothing, so the structure survives the round trip.

Does this work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and it keeps working, because all the processing happens in your browser. That is also the simplest way to confirm nothing is being sent anywhere.

Is there a limit on how much I can paste in?

Nothing we impose. The practical limit is your device’s memory, since the work happens locally. Very large inputs get slower rather than being refused.
