Print your name and the date the photograph was taken onto the photo itself, without leaving the size the form demands.

Target: under 300 KB
Dimensions: 413 × 531 px
Choose your scan or drag it here output 413 × 531 px · under 300 KB · JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC in · JPEG out · paste from the clipboard works too

Leave blank for best quality with no size limit.

Both are drawn inside the photo, so the file stays the size the form asks for.

Clear one field to scale proportionally.

How to use this tool

  1. Choose your photograph, or drag it onto the box above. It is cropped to fill 413 × 531 px from the centre — never stretched, so faces keep their proportions.
  2. There is nothing to set. This page is already fixed at 413 × 531 px, under 300.0 KB, JPEG.
  3. Check the output dimensions read exactly 413 × 531 px, then download. If the size limit could not be met at those fixed dimensions, the panel says so rather than quietly shrinking the image.

UPSC asks for a photograph showing the candidate name and the date it was taken. Most people do this by handing the printout to a studio, or by pasting text over the image in a phone editor and then discovering the file no longer matches the pixel size or the KB limit. This draws the text into a white band inside the photo and then compresses to the limit, so the result is still exactly the file the form wants. The default 413 × 531 pixels is 3.5 × 4.5 cm at 300 DPI.

Name and date on photo: why uploads get rejected

Getting under the limit is the easy half. The 413 × 531 pixel box has to be right as well, and several other things are checked before a human sees the file:

  • Your exam does not ask for this. UPSC does; for SSC the guidance conflicts, and several notifications ask only for the name and date on the back of a printed copy. Adding text the form did not ask for can itself be a reason to reject a photograph, so check your notification first.
  • The date is not the date the photograph was taken. It is meant to show the photo is recent, so backdating it defeats the requirement and is a false declaration.
  • The name does not match the application exactly. Use the spelling on your form, not a short version.
  • The face is already near the bottom of the frame, so the band covers part of your chin. Crop with more space below your face before adding the text.

How it works

Most compressors pick a fixed quality level and hope for the best, which is why they either overshoot the limit or land far below it and throw away detail you did not need to lose.

This tool runs a binary search instead. It encodes your image at a mid-range quality, measures the resulting file, then narrows the range — higher if there is room, lower if it is over — repeating seven times. It keeps the largest result that still fits. If the lowest quality is still too big, it reduces the pixel dimensions and searches again.

All of it runs on your own device using the browser's canvas API. Nothing is transmitted.

Who needs Name and date on photo

UPSC Civil Services, CDS and NDA applications, which run on the common One Time Registration profile, and any other form whose notification asks for the name and date of the photograph to be visible on it.

Name and date on photo — frequently asked questions

Which exams need the name and date on the photo?

UPSC asks for it — the photograph must show the candidate name and the date it was taken. For SSC the published guidance conflicts: some guides say it must be printed on the photo, others say the name and date belong on the reverse of a printed copy and that the digital upload needs no visible stamp. We could not reach an official SSC notification to settle it, so read the photo section of your own notification before adding anything.

What date format should I use?

Whatever your notification shows. DD/MM/YYYY is the usual convention on Indian forms. The field takes free text, so you can match the format exactly.

Does adding the text break the pixel size or the KB limit?

No, and that is the point of doing it here. The text is drawn into a band inside the frame rather than added underneath, so the image stays at the dimensions you set, and the compression runs afterwards to bring it under your KB limit.

Can I put the text somewhere other than the bottom?

Not at the moment. The foot of the photograph is where forms and studios place it, and it is the one position that does not cover the face.

The name is too long and looks small.

The text shrinks to fit the width rather than running off the edge. If it is too small to read, increase the pixel width, or use the name exactly as it appears on your form rather than adding titles.

How do I resize my photo for the Add Name and Date to an Exam Photo form online?

Upload it to the tool at the top of this page. It is already set to the Add Name and Date to an Exam Photo specification, so there is nothing to configure — select your photo and download the result. Everything happens on your device, so it works even on a slow connection near the application deadline.

Your photograph is never uploaded. That matters near a deadline: the work happens on your device, so it does not slow down when the portal does, and it works on a weak connection — how that works.
