How to use this tool
- Choose your image, drag it onto the box, or paste it from the clipboard. JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC all go in; JPEG comes out.
- There is nothing to set. This page is already fixed at JPEG.
- Download from the panel, which shows the original size, the final size and the output dimensions. Nothing was uploaded at any point.
HEIC is the default on iPhones and is rejected by most upload forms. Note that browser support for decoding HEIC is limited — this works in Safari, and may not in Chrome or Firefox.
Convert HEIC to JPG — the specification
| Input format | HEIC |
|---|---|
| Output format | JPG |
| Quality | High — 90% where the target format is lossy |
| Transparency | Flattened onto white |
| Metadata | EXIF is not carried across, which also strips GPS location data |
Convert HEIC to JPG: what can go wrong
These are the failures that actually come up, in roughly the order they happen:
- Your browser cannot decode HEIC. Safari on macOS and iOS can; Chrome and Firefox generally cannot. On those, convert on an Apple device or change your iPhone camera setting to "Most Compatible".
- The file is corrupt or was only partially downloaded.
- You needed the transparency preserved — JPEG cannot store an alpha channel, so it is filled with white.
How it works
Your browser decodes the HEIC file, then re-encodes it as JPG. Both steps use the browser's own image pipeline, so no library is downloaded and nothing is sent over the network.
Where the source has transparency and the target format does not support it, transparent areas are filled with white rather than black — the default that catches people out with other converters.
A measured run of this exact preset
Not an estimate: this page’s own code, run against an 8 MP photograph and an A4 scan at 200 dpi, with every encode recorded. The files and the method are published here.
| Input | Result | Change | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 MP photograph 2448 × 3264 px · 1.88 MB | 1.82 MB 2448 × 3264 px | 3% smaller | Converted at high quality |
| A4 scan at 200 dpi 1654 × 2339 px · 996.0 KB | 962.3 KB 1654 × 2339 px | 3% smaller | Converted at high quality |
Step by step
The two inputs do not behave the same way, and the gap is the useful part: the 8 MP photograph finished 1.9× larger than the A4 scan at 200 dpi under the same settings. Detail costs bytes. If your own file is flat — a scan, a screenshot, a document photographed straight on — expect results nearer the A4 scan at 200 dpi row.
Who needs Convert HEIC to JPG
Fixing format rejections on upload forms, preparing images for software that only accepts certain formats, and reducing file size where the source format is inefficient.
Convert HEIC to JPG — frequently asked questions
Does converting lose quality?
Some, since JPG is lossy. The tool encodes at 90% quality, where the difference is generally invisible.
Is EXIF data preserved?
No. Metadata including camera details and GPS coordinates is discarded during conversion. For most people that is a privacy benefit, but if you need EXIF retained, this is not the right tool.
Can I convert several files at once?
Not currently — one file at a time. Each conversion takes under a second, so a small batch is quick.
Which file types can I upload?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and HEIC from an iPhone all go in. The output here is JPEG. Conversion happens as part of the process, so there is no need to convert first.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes, including photos straight from your camera roll. The work happens on the device, so a very large image is slower on a phone than on a laptop, but nothing is uploaded either way.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. No account, no trial period, no watermark on the output and no cap on how many times you use it. The site is funded by advertising.
